Inclusion of science books of intermediate stage in Saudi Arabia to socio-scientific issues

The study aimed to determine the extent of inclusion of socio-scientific issues (SSI) in the students' books of science for the three grades (7-8-9) which contains (6) books in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The study used method of content analysis to found out the extent of inclusion of socio-scientific issues & its types. The study pointed out that the books contain (42) references to the socio-scientific issues in (83) lessons distributed in the books of the three grades according to the following percentages (31%), (43%) and (26%) respectively. All issues were implicitly included in all lessons, and the term" socio-scientific issues" was not explicitly stated in any of the lessons. It pointed out that the most important topics that referred to the socio-scientific issues related to the incurable diseases , human body organs, resources and environmental changes, renewable energy, and that these issues are unevenly distributed at the level of study units in all books of the three grades, The study recommended several recommendations and proposals, including the necessity of explicit reference to important societal scientific issues when dealing with them and urging students to prepare work projects that express them, linking societal scientific issues with local culture and societal customs, conducting further studies dealing with the method of incorporating societal scientific issues into science curricula and the optimal and correct way To be taught.
